Winterize Your Car Part 2 – Stranded in Car during a Winter Storm

Although weather reporting is improving, it still is not completely accurate and sudden winter storms can keep you from getting to your destination and strand you on the side of the road. Therefore, it is important to know basic winter survival techniques until the roads clear or rescuers can find you. So, what do you do to survive if you find yourself stranded in your car on the side of an impassable road during a winter storm?

  • You should not leave your car if at all possible. If you must leave your car, leave a note visible to rescuers on the dash or front seat of your car.
  • Use your cell phone to call for help.
  • Try to stay warm and dry until help arrives.
  • To conserve fuel and reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run your car while stranded in snow. If you absolutely must run your car for heat, clear any snow from your exhaust pipe and run the engine for only 10 minutes at a time.
  • Use colorful items or clothing to direct emergency personnel to your vehicle should you be off of the roadway.
  • If you are in a remote area and feel that you may not be easily found, as a last resort remove the air from your spare tire and burn it during daylight to provide a smoke signal to rescuers. Be sure to burn the tire at least 50 feet or more away from your vehicle in an open area away from tree cover or brush.
