Washington, D.C. Snowmageddon Causes Treacherous Winter Driving Conditions | Prince William Personal Injury Attorney

In the wake of the historic snowstorm in the Washington, D.C. area that has been dubbed by President Obama as Snowmageddon 2010, Washingtonians are facing snow covered and icy roads that will take days and possibly weeks to clear. To add insult to injury, the Washington, D.C. area is anticipating an additional 10″-20″ of snow to begin falling on February 9, 2010 which will make driving conditions even more challenging and treacherous.

From February 5 through February 7, 2010, Virginia State Police is reporting that they responded to 1,921 traffic crashes and 2,098 disabled vehicles which does not include the calls that local police departments responded to during the snowstorm. With this in mind, AAA-MidAtlantic offers the following winter driving tips:

  • Stay alert and drive defensively.
  • Slow down.
  • Stopping distances are 10x longer in snow and ice. Triple the usual distance between you and vehicles ahead of you.
  • Maintain a constant, safe speed.
  • Steer into the direction of the skid if your vehicle starts skidding.
  • Avoid passing plows, unless it is necessary.
  • Use major routes that have been cleared or salted, whenever possible.
