Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act – Part 2

Commercial and Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Safety…

I previously discussed in Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act – Part 1 the requirements of swimming pools and spas having drain covers and secondary anti-entrapment devices compliant with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act to prevent swimmers from being trapped in the suction of a drain. However, did you know that the Act further encourages the installation and use of layers of protection surrounding spas and swimming pools as well as the use of safety devices to prevent entry in the water and to alert to unsupervised entry into the swimming pool and spa area?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that every year approximately 300 children under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools and spas. Children should never be in a swimming pool or spa area unsupervised but those of us that have experience with children know that is not always possible. With this in mind, the CPSC recommends that proper use of safety devices to prevent children from entering the pool and spa area unsupervised is necessary to reduce the chances of injury or drowning.

Therefore, the CPSC and the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals have published safety tips on their websites which every parent, guardian, and pool owner should read and practice.

Do you think homeowners do enough to prevent children from entering swimming pool and spa areas?
