January 21, 2010: Toyota issues recall of 2.3 million cars for gas pedal problem
On August 28, 2009, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Mark Saylor, his wife, daughter, and brother-in-law were killed in a fatal car accident near San Diego, California when an accelerator pedal was suspected to have been caught under a floor mat of a 2009 Lexus ES 350 causing the vehicle to speed out of control.
Following this deadly accident, Toyota issued a recall safety warning advising owners to remove the driver’s floor mat and not replace it until further notice from certain Toyota and Lexus models. But now Toyota is issuing a new recall that is reported as separate from the September 2009 recall citing that “accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick” when a floor mat is not present for certain model year 2005-2010 Toyota brand cars and trucks to include:
- 2009-2010 RAV4
- 2009-2010 Corolla
- 2009-2010 Matrix
- 2005-2010 Avalon
- 2007-2010 Camry
- 2010 Highlander
- 2007-2010 Tundra
- 2008-2010 Sequoia

The news that Toyota has expanded this recall, in conjunction with a statement that removes blame from the previously identified faulty floor mats, is proof that this situation is slowly spiraling out of control.
