Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Causes Fatal Car Crash While Sleep Deprived and Distracted | Virginia Personal Injury Attorney
On March 15, 2010, Frederick Poust III was charged with vehicular homicide and 46 counts of reckless endangerment following a fatal collision he allegedly caused while driving a school bus full of Perkiomen Valley Middle School students in suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 17, 2010.
An on-board video camera on the school bus shows Poust allegedly running through 10 stop signs, sleep deprived, and distracted by using an iPod and talking on a wireless headset while he was transporting students to school. The video also shows that Poust did not stop before turning into Perkiomen Valley Middle School which put him into the path of a Honda Civic driven by Freddy Carroll causing the fatal collision killing Carroll’s passenger Richard Taylor.
This is not the first time Poust has been the subject of a fatal car crash. Oddly enough, Poust started the national debate over cell phone distract driving after he ran a stop sign while dialing on his cell phone causing a collision killing two-year-old Morgan Lee Pena in 1999. Poust was cited for the car crash that killed Morgan Lee Pena but was not charged criminally.
Local parents and officials are angered over the fatal crash asking why Poust was allowed behind the wheel of a school bus having a history of causing a fatal car crash. According to Poust’s employer Student Transportation of America, they were aware that Poust was involved in a car accident in 1999 but were not aware of the details as the Pennsylvania Department of Education only requires a 5 year driving history investigation prior to employment. Furthermore, no red flags arose during his background check since Poust was not charged criminally for the 1999 fatal crash.
