National Teen Driver Safety Week – Virginia Teen Driving Restrictions

Since car accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers, it is important to teach teenage drivers how to operate a car responsibly. In an effort to help parents educate their teenage drivers on safe driving practices, Congress designated the third week of October as National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Virginia takes teen driver safety seriously and has established Teen Driving Restrictions for drivers that are under the age of 18 years to include:

  • Curfew Restrictions which prohibits licensed drivers under the age of 18 from driving between the hours of midnight and 4:00 a.m. except under certain circumstances;
  • Passenger Restrictions which limits the number of passengers under the of age 18 that a teenage driver may transport; and
  • Cell Phone/Wireless Telecommunications Device Restrictions which prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a cell phone except while the vehicle is lawfully stopped or in the case of a driver emergency.
