Motorists and Motorcyclists Can Safely Share the Road

With warmer weather drawing more motorcyclists on the roads, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Governor Kaine are urging motorists and motorcyclists to safely share the roads in an effort to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

VDOT reports that in 2007 approximately 2,200 individuals were injured and 126 were killed in motorcycle accidents on Virginia’s roads. In an effort to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents, VDOT wants to remind Virginia motorists that they should avoid distractions while driving in order to maintain proper control of their vehicles and to keep a proper lookout for motorcycles which are often difficult to see.

Motorcyclists regardless of their experience are also urged to take responsibility for their safety and continue to educate themselves on proper motorcycling handling and defensive driving tactics to avoid collisions with inattentive motorists.
