Swimming Pool Safety – Lawsuit Filed Alleging Pool Drain Entrapment Drowning
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that on June 10, 2009, Ericka Williams filed a lawsuit against The Downtown Athletic Club of Pittsburgh and The Doubletree Hotel & Suites alleging that her husband Lorenzo Williams drowned on April 11, 2009 by being “entrapped in the suction of the swimming pool drain” that was ran by the club and located on hotel property at One Bigelow Square in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In light of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act which was established to educate the public on swimming pool and spa safety and to prevent swimming pool and spa drain entrapment deaths, there has been no confirmation as to whether the club’s pool had drain covers and secondary anti-entrapment devices installed that were compliant with the new swimming pool safety and spa regulations that went into effect on December 19, 2008. The Pool Safety Council issued a press release calling for more enforcement of the new swimming pool safety law.
Although Ericka Williams reports that her husband was a good swimmer, Lorenzo Williams drowned in the 10 foot section of the pool. Lorenzo’s death has been determined to be accidental by the medical examiner.
