Ice on Bridge Caused 14 Car Accident on Westfields in Chantilly, Virginia

On December 5, 2009, drivers traveling on Westfields Boulevard in Chantilly, Virginia were caught off guard when 14 cars crashed into each other after they lost control on ice that had formed on the overpass of Route 28. Luckily only one person sustained minor injuries from the accident.

This unfortunate event should be a reminder that winter weather is upon us and drivers need to be aware that ice forms on bridges before it will on the roads. If the air temperature is at or below freezing during or following a rain, ice, or snow storm, the odds are that a bridge will have ice on it causing a treacherous driving condition. Drive safe and smart this winter and keep in mind that as the temperatures drop, unseen hazardous driving conditions can exist.

Why do bridges ice before the rest of the highway?
