Enterprise Rented and Sold Chevrolet Impalas without Side-Curtain Airbags

An investigation conducted by The Kansas City Star revealed that Enterprise Rent-A-Car leased and sold 66,000 model year 2006-2008 Chevrolet Impalas without the standard safety equipment side-curtain airbags normally installed on Impalas. Enterprise opted to delete the side-curtain airbags which have been proven to reduce serious head injuries in side impacts to save approximately $11.5 million.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is known for selling their vehicles used once they have passed their usability as rented vehicles. To ad insult to injury, the investigation by The Kansas City Star also discovered that 745 of the used Impalas that Enterprise sold were advertised as having the deleted side-curtain airbags. The customers that purchased these vehicles have been contacted to remedy the situation.

Since side-curtain airbags are not currently federally mandated to be installed as standard safety equipment on all vehicles, rental agencies have the option to delete non-mandatory safety equipment to save money. As many drivers hold safety to the highest standard on the vehicles they operate, renters should be aware of the potential absence of non-mandated safety equipment on rental cars and, if concerned, should ask the rental agency about specific safety equipment installed on any vehicle that they intend to rent prior to driving it off of the lot.
