Congress Considers Nationwide Ban on Texting While Driving

The Huffington Post is reporting a bizarre car accident that occurred in Lockport, New York today involving a flatbed truck driver that was texting on one cell phone while talking on another at the same time. During this driver’s bad attempt to multitask while driving, he hit a car injuring a woman and her 8-year-old passenger, crashed through a fence, and then side swiped a house before taking a dive into a backyard pool.

In an effort to reduce accidents such at this, Congress is considering a bill that would force all states to ban texting while driving. Although 14 states currently have such laws on the books, many of those states consider the act a secondary offense which makes the ban on texting difficult to enforce. Therefore, as part of the proposed bill for a nationwide ban on texting while driving, several senators are recommending that texting while driving become a primary offense making it easier to enforce and to implement a national campaign to educate drivers on the dangers of texting while driving.

If this bill becomes a law, do you think it will be enough to deter drivers from texting while driving?
