Boat Safety – Boating Under the Influence (BUI) Fatalities are on the Rise

Boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a.k.a. BUI, is a major boat safety concern for the U.S. Coast Guard and other local water authorities as intoxicated boat operators cause 1/3 of boating fatalities each year. It does not matter whether you are operating a row boat or a cruise ship, operating a boat under the influence is illegal in every state which can lead to fines and/or jail time not to mention the danger to your passengers and others using the water.

As alcohol and drug related boating accidents are on the rise, some jurisdictions such as Louisiana are combating boating under the influence accidents by adopting laws that require alcohol and drug testing of all boat operators involved in a fatal boating accident with hopes of getting intoxicated boat operators off the water.

Caution is also being issued to passengers as a large number of intoxicated boat passengers become injured or die from falling overboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard would like for you to consider alternatives to using drugs and alcohol while on the water and has published BUI Boat Safety Tips.
